Ideas for Differentiating by Skill Level

1. Beginner Level
   • Simplified Movements: Choose activities with simple, single-step movements, such as “Stand on one foot like a turkey” or “Reach up like a tree,” to build foundational balance and body awareness.
   • Demonstrate and Imitate: Show each movement and have children imitate it to support those who need more visual guidance and modeling.
   • Reduced Duration: Encourage shorter bursts of activity to prevent fatigue and help children focus on the quality of movement rather than duration.
2. Intermediate Level
   • Combine Movements: For children ready for a bit more challenge, combine two movements, like “Gobble like a turkey” and “Stomp like a pilgrim,” to encourage transition between actions and sequencing.
   • Add Counting or Timing: Incorporate a counting or timing element, such as holding a pose for five seconds or hopping like a turkey three times, to build rhythm and timing skills.
   • Choice and Independence: Let children choose which card they’d like to try next, promoting independence and self-regulation as they manage their activity levels.
3. Advanced Level
   • Create a Movement Sequence: Ask children to select 3-4 cards and create their own Thanksgiving-themed movement sequence, fostering complex motor planning and sequencing.
   • Balance Challenges: Incorporate balance variations by having children perform movements on one leg, on a soft surface, or with their eyes closed to build spatial awareness and stability.
   • Incorporate Storytelling: Encourage children to come up with a Thanksgiving story incorporating each movement, which builds creativity, language skills, and engagement with the activity.

• Warm-Up Exercises: Start sessions with a few cards as warm-up exercises to prepare children for more targeted therapeutic activities, helping improve focus and muscle activation.
• Sensory Integration: Use specific cards to provide proprioceptive and vestibular input for sensory regulation, such as balancing on one foot like a scarecrow or hopping like a turkey.
• Goal-Focused Selection: Choose cards that align with each child’s therapy goals (e.g., balance, coordination, motor planning) and focus on those movements throughout the session.
